It took us awhile to get to our campground in Iowa. We left Minneopa St Pk at about 9 am and got here at about 3. Of course we made a few stops along the way:
1st stop was in Orange City (very Dutch) the visitor center was out to lunch…
Next was Le Mars, the Ice Cream Capital of the WORLD!
of course we had to stop for some very good ice cream
looking at the pictures is making me want more!
we finally arrived at our destination. Lewis and Clark State Park in Onawa Iowa. great park, full hook ups and a very level lot! we were not expecting to see that until we got to Kansas.
This Keelboat is located at our park, the George B King
sunrise was amazing:
Headed back up to Sioux City, Iowa today, first stop was to see the monument to Sgt. Charles Floyd. He was the only person to die as part of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
2nd stop at the Sgt Floyd River Museum. it was an actual inspection boat that was used from 1932 to 1972.
hand dug out canoe Captain Kate!
next was The Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, beautiful sculptures and a great center
the War Eagle Monument where you can actually see Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota!
next stop was the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center. beautiful center, with wonderful hiking trails. A few birds, snakes, frogs etc… great place to walk and see nature.
a quick stop (did not get out of the truck) to see:
then finally to Trinity Heights. this use to be a seminary but has been transformed into a outdoor Cathedral. Beautiful and peaceful.
these statues are 33 ft tall and made from stainless steel
There are only 4 life size wood carvings of the Last Supper, this one, the one in Wisconsin, there is one in Kansas city (not sure why we have not seen it yet!) and one in Germany. We like this one much better than the one in Wis
finally a tree house at our park
a great day in Sioux City. but we are heading out to Kansas tomorrow (Sat). this should be our longest trip at 270 miles. of course it all depends how many stops and detours we take….
