Off to Work we go… Jan 6, 2014

Monday: We began our day at 7:00 am Calif time/8:00 am AZ time..  we have to keep track of where we are and what time zone we are in.   Our office and home is in California, our Maintenance yard and work is in Arizona.  So we are to work Mon-Wed from 7-3:30 Cailf time.

We got to meet the staff, get our work stuff including a cell phone for texting, t-shirts, hat and a jacket.  Signed papers for tools, keys, safety etc.. Our direct supervisor Dave is a retired 20 year Marine, so lots of “ yes sir’s and yes mam’s” when ever we ask questions. We took a ride around the refuge, making stops at all of the places we will need to check out and pick up trash etc.  it took us the entire day to do the entire route, we walked about 75% of the paths.

The refuge is beautiful, with lots of birds.. tomorrow we will be on our own so will bring the camera and binoculars.

Tuesday: the most important thing they keep telling us is:

we drove over 100 miles to hit all the parks, we were on trash duty!  we were at the southernmost site when we got a call to leave the area!  We were compromising an LE operation!  our first day and we get called…

lots of signs..

I am the Gate Master!  (think that might be a Dungeons and Dragons thing)

Since Eric drives I take care of the gates..

well our first day, we did not complete our project… either too much trash (we had less than a 1/2 bag) or we are too slow, talk too much and/or bird too much…  will need to figure it out. I did send my first text to Dave.  it took a while to figure out how to make spaces then somehow I got it all to be in Capital letters.  Dave just laughed and said that I was yelling at him!  I will get the hang of this too.

Wednesday: Today we worked with the staff, Dave and Martin fixing fences. did not get any real pictures, but had a wonderful day and learned how to mend barb wired fences..

Thursday:  yea.. our day off.. lots of chores including laundry and getting the satellite hooked up.  We now have our local channels from LA instead of Phoenix.  Shopping, visitor centers and fitness room and time for a nap..  went out for dinner at a local Mexican restaurant.

Friday: Eric made blueberry pancakes for breakfast. soooo good.  a few chores, walks and then off to golf.  we picked the cheap par 3 to begin our golfing. $10 each for 9 holes.

the grass was really brown and the greens were fast..

Looks like I need to keep my arms straight!  I was able to get the ball on the green in 2 hits but then putting was really bad. Eric has much better form.  but his putting was bad too.

back home for dinner..  CORN (Clean Out Refrigerator Night).

We are going to Las Vegas tomorrow, for the weekend to meet up with cousin Jim and Rose, we will have lunch on Monday. then back home on Tues to work next Wed-Fri.
